INFORMATION ON MODIFIED DIVISION
Jake Martens, DME A52987
The USPSA Multigun Rules will add the Modified Division as a provisional division under bylaw 16.2; Appendix D6 Modified Division (Provisional) will be added to the USPSA Multigun Rulebook only. The specifics of the division require the use of an optic on the handgun, but all other handgun requirements will be the same as the current Limited Division (Appendix D3 MG Rules). The optic must be attached directly to the slide between the rear of the slide and the ejection port. It cannot be attached to the frame in any way.
The shotgun for Modified Division allows for a maximum tube length of 52 inches and a maximum of 12 rounds at the start signal. A non-magnifying optic is allowed, but box-fed shotguns are not allowed. Rifles may use a bi-pod and similar support as long as it stays attached to the rifle throughout the stage.
The popularity of optics on handguns has exploded. Under the previous USPSA Multigun Rules, having an optic on a handgun, whether it is slide- or frame-mounted, would have put it in the Open Division. Open Division in Multigun, just like in the handgun rule set, is dominated by compensated Open-style raceguns. Also, the shotgun is allowed to be a box-fed style and the rifle is allowed multiple optics and bi-pods and bags. In order to run your Carry Optics or similar slide-mounted optic handgun, you would need to consider other equipment changes with your shotgun and rifle.
After working with other Match Directors and reviewing several other 3-gun competitions and rule sets, the USPSA Multigun Committee presented the Modified Division as provisional to the Rules Committee, reviewed and presented to the Board in July. Further review was requested and a rule set was presented in October. The Board reviewed the final proposal and equipment rule set in November.
The updated appendix and rule set will be available online by January 1, 2023 and the effective date is January 31, 2023.
