Dear USPSA Members,
The foundation of any successful member organization rests on a clear alignment between its governance and its core values. Today, we're excited to share a transformative vision for USPSA – one that strengthens member voice, enhances transparency, and creates a more responsive organization that better serves you.
This vision emerges from extensive work by our Bylaws Committee, which includes both experienced board members and newly elected directors who bring fresh perspectives to our governance. Together, they've developed draft bylaws that redirect more control to our membership while creating clearer lines of accountability in our operations.
At its core, every successful organization must evolve to meet the changing needs of those it serves. Our proposed changes reflect this evolution, strengthening member rights through expanded voting powers, increased transparency in board operations, and a new Director-at-Large position elected by our entire membership. These changes represent a fundamental shift toward putting more power in our members' hands while creating a more efficient operational structure.
Our current governance structure, which has served us for many years, places significant operational responsibilities on elected officials. While this approach was appropriate for its time, we've recognized that it creates inherent challenges in maintaining consistent, long-term strategic focus and efficient operational execution.
We envision a more effective structure: one where your Board of Directors focuses on setting clear strategic direction and organizational objectives, while professional staff implements the strategies to achieve these goals. This model is widely recognized as a best practice in organizational governance, allowing for both stronger oversight and more efficient operations.
Key elements of this proposed transformation include:
- Shifting from an operational board to a strategic governing board
- Creating a professional Executive Director role to lead day-to-day operations
- Adding a Director-at-Large position, elected by the full membership, to ensure broad representation
- Maintaining strong democratic principles with nine voting board members
- Establishing clear separation between governance and operational roles
Given this proposed direction, we will not conduct a special election for an interim president. Instead, we will be sharing detailed draft bylaws for your review and feedback. We want to hear your thoughts on this vision for our future.
This is a significant change, and we understand you may have questions. We're committed to an open dialogue about these proposals. In the coming weeks, we will:
- Share comprehensive documentation of the proposed changes
- Provide clear channels for member feedback
- Ensure your voice is heard in shaping our organization's future
The strength of USPSA has always been its members. Together, we can build an organizational structure that better serves our sport and community for years to come.
Sincerely,
The USPSA Board of Directors
