2025 SCSA New Stage Proposal Process & Timeline
USPSA Headquarters
Jul 02, 2025

On 5/19/25 the USPSA Board of Directors approved the recommendation of the Steel Challenge Committee to add two new official stages to Steel Challenge. This recommendation was based upon the results of the April 2025 Steel Challenge survey responses which overwhelmingly favored this concept.

The next step in the process to add these new stages is to "crowdsource" member generated designs to be considered for candidacy as new stages. The following form lays out the expectations, requirements, and timeline for stage design candidacy:

Membership Requirements:

  • Designs must be submitted by active members in good standing.

Submission Requirements/Process:

  1. Each submitted design must include a name comprised of one to three words.

  2. Up to five designs can be submitted per member.

  3. All designs must be submitted via email to [email protected] and be received by end-of-day Pacific Time on 7/31/25 to be considered.

  4. All designs should include a stage diagram like those found in Appendix B of the Steel Challenge Rules using the Steel Challenge New Stage Submission Form (PDF).

  5. The Steel Challenge Committee will evaluate valid submissions and select the most promising candidates in August.

  6. Finalist candidate stages will be presented to membership for feedback and input no later than end-of-month September.

  7. Selected stages will become provisional stages with provisional PSTs for 2026. The committee reserves the option to make modifications to provisional stages and PSTs as needed and potentially with little to no notice.

  8. No existing 2025 stages are expected to be retired in 2026.

Design Requirements:

  1. Stage designs should use either of the following two plate configurations:

    • 3x 12 inch round and 2x 18-by-24 inch rectangular

    • 4x 12 inch round and 1x 18-by-24 inch rectangular

  2. Stage maximum dimensions: 32ft wide and 75ft long.

  3. Designs should not require movement during the execution of a string.

    Other limits and restrictions:

    • Shooting box max size 4'x4'

    • Maximum number of shooting boxes: 3

    • Maximum number of stop plates: 1

    • Minimum shots per string: 5

    • Maximum hits per plate: 1

    • Minimum/ Maximum target height 5ft/ 6ft

    • Plates should be no closer to the shooting box(es) than 21ft.

    • Designs should not attempt to alter default start conditions for divisions (e.g. holstered and, low-ready)

    • All designs should meet existing SCSA stage layout expectations defined in 2.2 of the Steel Challenge rules
