Candidate: Keith Stephenson

Keith Stephenson

Raytown, MO

My name is Keith Stephenson. I work in general construction and home renovation. I live in Raytown, Missouri and my home club is Mill Creek rifle Club in Desoto, Kansas. I found USPSA in the spring of 2017 and was hooked instantly. In 2018 I shot my first major match and I've shot 10-12 majors every year since. I'm a master class shooter in Carry Optics, Limited, Production and Single Stack and I'm currently working on Limited Optics. Over the past eight years I've served on the board of three of our local clubs (Pioneer, The Bullet Hole and Mill Creek) for 2-3 years each.
1. What motivates you to serve as a USPSA Area Director?
I think USPSA is great the way it is and I would like to add a calm and reasonable voice to help it stay that way.
2. What actions have you taken to support and grow USPSA in your area prior to your candidacy?
Over the 8 years I've been in this sport I've served on the board of 3 of our local clubs here in the Kansas City area. As the Range Master for Mill Creek USPSA I help design, build and proof stages for our local matches.
3. What relevant experience or qualifications do you bring to the role of Area Director? (Include both volunteer and professional experience.)
I've worked for years with customers, contractors and small groups of workers to come up with plans and or solution to achieve our end goals. I've worked with several boards to help keep our local clubs strong and promote growth.
4. Based on your review of the USPSA bylaws, what are the responsibilities of an Area Director, and how do you plan to execute them?
I believe the job of the board of directors is to create and manage the policies of the organization. It is our responsibility to come up with changes or improvements to rules and procedures and to help guide the managing director as he runs the organization.
5. What are the top three challenges facing USPSA right now, and what would be your approach to addressing them as an Area Director?
To be honest I can't think of three things that are wrong. The local clubs are great at recruiting new members, so growth is good. The classifier system is being worked on and looks promising. We have a very strong rule book. Finances are always a concern but look to be in good shape for now. Over the past few years the board members have done a great job on straitening thing out and I would like to help it stay that way.
6. How will you support clubs, section coordinators, and members in your Area? How will you contribute to member recruitment and retention?
By being open and receptive to any concerns and questions they have. While I've never been the Match Director for a match or club, I've worked with an amazing group of people here in the greater Kansas City area and I'm confident as a group we can help with any issues or questions any clubs, coordinators or members have. Recruitment and retention happens at the local level so helping the local clubs should keep recruitment and retention strong.
7. How will you ensure that your decisions as a Board member represent the interests and concerns of members in your Area?
By communicating with Match Directors of local and major matches to understand how there members feel and what there concerns are.
8. Are there any other specific issues you would work to address as Area Director?
Issues are basically opportunities for improvement and will always be there.
9. If not elected, how do you plan to continue contributing to USPSA and your Area?
If not elected I will continue to serve on the board of my local club and continue helping newer shooters feel comfortable and welcome. I enjoy major matches and will continue shooting most of the major matches in the surrounding states and supporting the clubs in my area.
