My name is Teryn "Tee Rex" Colvin and I am seeking election of the Area 6 Director position because I am an objective and qualified representative who seeks to further the mission of USPSA and Steel Challenge. Educational qualifications include a B.S in Finance, A.A.S in Computer Technology, LEAN/Six Sigma Black Belt, Kyocera Master Technician and numerous other professional certifications in various industries. I am a 3 division Grandmaster in Steel Challenge, Chief Range Officer, and B class USPSA.
I am Vice President of our family owned technology company which spans a majority of Area 6 as our service area. Being elected as Area 6 Director is a natural transition into a role and area I am already familiar servicing.
I also have an extensive history with serving and leading on non profit and municipal boards:
- Current Representative Seat 97, District 33, Mobile County Republican Party
- Current President of Moss Hill Sportsman’s Club
- Former President FBI National Citizens Academy Alumni Association
- Former Board of Directors Chickasaw, AL Planning Commission
- Former Board of Directors Chickasaw, AL Library Board
1. What motivates you to serve as a USPSA Area Director?
I do not have any self interest in wanting this role. I was approached by several in my area asking me to please run and represent them.
When you are called to leadership by your peers and feel a strong conviction to do it, then you should be obedient and do it. Being called to serve is a high honor and I will respect and serve everyone with integrity.
2. What actions have you taken to support and grow USPSA in your area prior to your candidacy?
To further expand on the items I've already listed, I've taken an active role in getting people to the range and working on shooter retention. I've achieved this by:
- Allowing juniors to shoot 2 entries for free in the Mississippi Steel Challenge Championship
- Being intentional and available to women shooters to help her develop in the sport.
- Being intentional to invite those with disabilities to come shoot and providing them their proper accommodations and encouraging the nearby ranges to also provide the accommodations
- Taking care of our aging members. This is part of the hospitality I provide at my home range. We installed fans, extra seating and do not rush our shooters to get finished.
- Creating a culture where people want to come shoot. USPSA and SC is for everyone and of all ages. As a Match Director, I communicate with neighboring Match Directors on issues and we work together to solve issues as they arise.
3. What relevant experience or qualifications do you bring to the role of Area Director? (Include both volunteer and professional experience.)
I mostly answered this in my bio above but to expand on this, I am very good at sales and marketing and will use these skills to further promote USPSA and SC.
4. Based on your review of the USPSA bylaws, what are the responsibilities of an Area Director, and how do you plan to execute them?
I've stated that I am Vice President of a successful technology company and also stated some of my professional skill set. To answer in the exact capacity of how I would achieve any of this without first being on the board to know what exactly I am dealing with, would be misinforming the membership. Bottom line, I have the skills and qualifications for managing the financial strategy, budgets, marketing, member retention, and negotiating/brokering deals.
5. What are the top three challenges facing USPSA right now, and what would be your approach to addressing them as an Area Director?
I stated this in detail with my introduction but will summarize that the top 3 challenges in USPSA now is
1. Lack of framework and lack of engagement of the Section Coordinators
2. Protecting the Women's Subcategory
3. Addressing the discontent between the members and the organization
6. How will you support clubs, section coordinators, and members in your Area? How will you contribute to member recruitment and retention?
I've stated the proposed framework on how I would achieve this in a previous section.
7. How will you ensure that your decisions as a Board member represent the interests and concerns of members in your Area?
Very simple, using the framework that I will implement with Section Coordinators and the Match Directors in the states, I will have direct feedback and know how exactly I need to represent everyone. I will also have a good gauge of the needs of each of the represented states and if I need to make a decision on the fly then I will be an informed decision because I would have already been in contact with everyone.
8. Are there any other specific issues you would work to address as Area Director?
Succession planning for Match Directors which encompasses all of the process it takes to host and sustain a match isn't occurring in the capacity I'd like to see it occur in. I would engage the clubs to help identify successors in order to ensure continuity in our sport.
9. If not elected, how do you plan to continue contributing to USPSA and your Area?
I've listed the major programs and contributions I'm already involved it. I'll continue to grow the programs and maintain the strong reputations the two major events have.
"Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy." - Dr Syed Muhammad Zeeshan Hussain Almashhadi. I hold this quote near to my heart because volunteering allows me to be a direct influence on the type of sport we want to create for other shooters, volunteers, collaborators and contributors. My volunteer history with USPSA and Steel Challenge is extensive:
- Current Match Director Mississippi Steel Challenge Championship (SC L2)
- Assistant Match Director/Match Coordinator Mississippi Classic (USPSA L2)
- Chief Range Officer
- Former Steel Challenge Committee Member
- Current Rules Committee Member
- Provide support and development resources to shooters of all abilities and skill levels
- Known as an innovator in our sport for the type of service and quality of the events I host
- Started a Steel Challenge club at Moss Hill Sportsman's Club
Once elected I will engage the Section Coordinators and form a subcommittee consisting of all the Section Coordinators. I would expect each Section Coordinators to engage the Match Directors in their state to form a subcommittee and everyone report back to me on the state of their represented states. To effectively lead a region there must be a grassroots effort. SC's will be engaged to provide monthly or quarterly feedback on what we need to work on in the respective areas. Travel expenditures are listed as a chief complaint by the membership and I couldn't agree more. By engaging the Section Coordinators and requiring more involvement from them on the ground level, this would significantly reduce the travel expenses by AD's in their areas because an internal process would achieve the expected outcome. Area 6 will be the innovator for the new internal process that will be hopefully implemented across all the areas in USPSA.
Women will also be protected. Being a woman and a former college athlete, I hold strong a convictions for this subject. Women will only be able to subcategorize in the women's subcategory. There is space for all to compete but only women will be able to subcategorize as women. I will fight for us to maintain the integrity of the women's category.
It must not be ignored that there is discontent between our members and organization. I intend to be fully transparent and communicative; to advocate for the will and the needs of our members. My career requires me to make tough decisions and negotiate. I'll go to bat for our membership each time.
My name is Teryn "Tee Rex" Colvin and ask for your support in the Area 6 Director election. I will bring the standard of service, innovation, and action to our Area. Let's win!
