Terre Haute, IN.
As a somewhat competitive person I fell in love with our sport the first time I tried it. I became a member of USPSA in 1991 and worked to bring the sport to my local club. We started with 3 bays and discussed what we were going to do if we had more than 30 shooters show up to shoot. In 1995 we hosted a RO seminar at the club and I became a certified Range Officer. From there I served as MD for several years. In the years since I have continued to promote the sport at every opportunity.
Why are you seeking to be President of USPSA?
I have made many life long friends in the shooting sports and enjoyed the sport immensely. I feel that this is my chance to really give back to the sport.
Prior to announcing your candidacy, what have you done to help promote safe, fun and fair practical shooting?
* Brought USPSA to my home club in 1995
* RO/CRO at a lot of local matches in Indiana
* RO/CRO at National events since about 2018
* Served as Indiana Section Coordinator for several years
* MD for Area 5 Steel Challenge Championship
What qualifications set you apart from other candidates? What previous or current employment or volunteer experience do you have that qualifies you for the role of USPSA President?
Prior to retiring in 2016 I was a superintendent for an electrical contractor installing equipment in a food processing facility. In this role I was in charge of the manpower and material needed to complete this work. During this time I worked closely with the plant engineers and maintenance on many large projects.
I am currently president of my local club and in the past served with the local volunteer fire dept.
I have spent my life working with diverse groups of people to solve problems and get things done.
Describe the current culture of USPSA.
A very diverse group of people brought together by their enjoyment of firearms and competitive shooting.
After reviewing the bylaws, please explain what the President of USPSA is responsible for and how will you fulfill those responsibilities if elected?
1) Be the chief representative for the sport of Practical Shooting in the US.
2) Serve as chairperson of the BoD
3) Preside at all corporate meetings
4) Serve as MD for National Events
5) Attend all National, International and World Championships in the US.
6) Help develop and promote the long term health and growth of the Practical Shooting sports
7) Serve as Regional Director to IPSIC
8) Serve as the national representative of the membership
I feel with my experience and freedom to travel I will be able to carry out these duties
What are the top three areas that need to be addressed within USPSA? What is your strategy for addressing them?
1) Transparency: Share all the information we can about the organization as allowed by law.
2) Continue to grow the membership: Come up with new ways to get and retain new members. The best recruiters are the local clubs.
3) Financial strength: Continue to control expenses and search for new revenue sources
If elected President of USPSA please explain how you will help support the clubs, sections and current members as well as promote USPSA to potential members?
Work to incentivize clubs and sections to recruit new members. Continue to make USPSA/ Steel Challenge a value to members and new members alike.
After reviewing Article 5 bylaw 5.1 please provide an outline of your strategy for items i) through vi)
i.) work closely with the BoD on controlling cost and search for new revenue streams
ii.) work with clubs and sections to recruit new members
iii.) work to promote the sport any way we can
iv.) continue to search out new venues to hold our national events
v.) promote relationships with other shooting organizations to promote shooting sports in general
vi.) work closely with the BoD and DNROI to implement policies and procedures based on what we see on the ground at matches
After reviewing the USPSA bylaws explain how you see your working relationship with the Managing Director and Board of Directors.
I have met the Managing director and all but 3 of the Board members. Based on those meetings and conversations I see no reason our working relationship would be anything but positive.
What is USPSA doing right?
1) Providing a venue for like minded people to get together and enjoy their hobby
2) Steel Challenge. Family friendly and relatively easy for clubs to get started with having matches
3) Classification system in both Steel Challenge and USPSA. We all like to know how we stack up!
4) Well trained safety officers
If elected, what other issues would you want to address and what is your strategy for addressing them.
1) Lack of ranges for people to shoot at. If membership grows like we would like it to, the lack of facilities will be a hindrance. Would need to work hard at range development.
If you are unsuccessful in your bid to become president, how will you serve USPSA in the future?
I will continue to work matches as a range officer and work to promote the sport at every opportunity.
